From the Isles of Scilly to Marazion
My usual sailing these days is Mirror dinghy racing at Mount's Bay Sailing Club, Marazion three times a week. Our sail from the Isles of Scilly back to Marazion will be something else: a true voyage. We will, however, be accompanied on our voyage by a very well prepared and experienced support team.
We will be starting from Hugh Town (on St. Mary's, Isles of Scilly) early one morning when we have suitable weather.
Depending on the winds and tides we will then either head up St. Mary's Road past the islands of Tresco and St. Martin's (avoiding numerous smaller islands and rocks) or we will head west for a short distance before heading south-east through St. Mary's Sound past St. Agnes.
We will then set off across open seas (approximately in an east north-easterly direction) towards Wolf Rock, a very isolated rock with a lighthouse (the first rock lighthouse to have a helicopter deck constructed on top) some 9 miles off Land's End.
From Wolf Rock we will head north-east towards Land's End, passing to the south of the famous landmark and Longships lighthouse and close to the Runnel Stone (just below Gwennap Head National Coastwatch Institution's lookout).
The final leg of the voyage will follow the beautiful coastline past the unique Minack Theatre nestling in the cliffs above Porthcurno, past Lamorna Cove and into Mount's Bay. Then passing Mousehole we will head for St. Michael's Mount and Marazion.
The whole voyage will be about 40 miles, 30 of which are across open seas. The passage area probably has more wrecks per square mile than anywhere else in the world and we will also be crossing the busy shipping lane off Land's End - we have certainly given ourselves a challenge! I can't wait to set sail!
